The Basics

ADDRESS: along the border of northeast Utah and southwest Wyoming

LAST VISIT: 2024

Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area surrounds the 91 mile long Flaming Gorge Reservoir. We visited the area in late September. Although tourist season runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day, the fall colors are absolutely spectacular, and we would definitely suggest visiting off season!

Flaming Gorge is in a sparsely populated area. We stayed in Manila, Utah, which was a great home base for exploring. Manila has a population of 323. If you need the ammenities of a larger town, you would need to drive a little over 60 miles north to Rock Springs, Wyoming, or about the same distance south to Vernal, Utah.

Since it spans such a large area, instead of trying to cover all of it here, I added links to pages about specific places we visited:

Our Opinion

Flaming Gorge is beautiful! We would definitely recommend visiting the area. Two of our favorite experiences were:
- Sheep Creek Geological Loop Drive, especially at sunset, and
- Dowd Mountain Overook - we were the only people there!
