OGALLALA I-80 KOA JOURNEY
The Basics
ADDRESS: 221 Road East 85, Ogallala, Nebraska
LOCATION: Just southeast of the Ogallala exit off I-80
LAST VISIT: 2024
It was easy to access, easy to navigate, there was plenty of room at our site, and everything worked.
Our Opinion
There were a couple of things that were minor annoyances:
They have a rule that you can't park your second vehicle on your site, even if there is room.
We stay at campgrounds next to interstates all of the time, because we think the convenience outweighs the noise.
However, there must be expansion joints or potholes on the interstate here, because alongside the standard truck noise, there was a "thump, thump, thump, thump" noise every time a truck drove by, which seemed harder to ignore.
Things to See and Do
Lake McConaughy
We drove partway around the lake, stopped at a scenic overlook near the dam, and stopped by a couple of beaches and camping areas. The lake is huge! (At least by Nebraska standards...)
Spruce Street Visitor Center
The Visitor Center is housed in an old Standard Oil station that was built in 1922, and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. We enjoyed stopping by to check out the building. It is located at 220 North Spruce Street in Ogallala.
Ogallala Water Tower
Nope. Not kidding.
The water tower is painted to look like a UFO, and the lights at night match the design. We love it!
