Base Camp Family Campground

The Basics

ADDRESS: 7001 Base Camp Road,Alamosa, Colorado

LOCATION: On Highway 160, 8 miles east of Alamosa

LAST VISIT: 2022

Base Camp Family Campground is a good home base for exploring around Alamosa and Great Sand Dunes National Park.

They have a "no contact" check in.
The trees aren't tall enough to provide shde yet (which means that you don't have to keep an eye out for branches).
The sites are flat, wide, and extra, extra long!
The campground is very easy to navigate.
The laundry and showers were absolutely immaculate.
The utilities and wifi worked well.
You can just barely see Great Sand Dunes National Park in the distance.
It is right on the highway, but we didn't mind the noise.
The location is very convenient; Great Sand Dunes is 25 miles northwest, and Alamosa is 8 miles to the east.

Our Opinion

It was a great home base, and we would definitely stay there again!

Things to See and Do

We didn't have enough time to see everything in the area, but we enjoyed these places:

Great Sand Dunes National Park
Watching the way the light changes the colors of the sand as the sun rises was a great experience.

Zapata Falls Hiking Trail
We wish we knew that you have to get a little bit wet to get a good view of the falls.
We would have taken the waterproof camera!

Colorado Welcome Center at Alamosa
The staff member there was very helpful as we were trying to determine which things to see in our short time there.
